Saype celebrates Mississauga in his monumental new artwork, titled, Citizens.
The artworks depicts a child playing with Kapla blocks, small wooden planks that have shaped the childhood of many of us, including Saype himself. Through this artwork, Saype seeks to emphasize the importance of coming together for a common goal, by acknowledging the amalgamated beginnings of Mississauga and celebrating its unique cultural make up.
In this artwork, the house of blocks symbolizes our planet: a fragile and expanding world, constantly evolving, and changing. Each wooden piece, carefully placed by the child represents the importance of every individual and every action in the building of a common future. The artwork stands in striking contrast to the modern skyscrapers surrounding the park, highlighting the simplicity of childhood and humanity at work amid the growing urban development of Mississauga.
The creation embodies the cooperation and solidarity essential to constructing a community that is prosperous for all. “Working together is key to building a sustainable and beneficial future for everyone,” says the artist. Through this piece, he invites us to reflect on how even the smallest contribution can help shape a better world.
We are honoured that Saype has chosen Mississauga to share his talent, celebrate the amalgamated beginnings of the city on our 50th anniversary, and share a beautiful message for the future. The piece he’s created perfectly reflects Mississauga’s diverse and inclusive community and the common goal we all share to work towards a prosperous future for all.
